Originally built in the 1960’s, Rocky River High School underwent a large renovation and expansion to help bring the school into the future. The key element to the renovation was the creation of The Commons. Formerly an enclosed, underutilized exterior courtyard, The Commons now activates and generates the heart of the building into a highly collaborative space. It links the media center, guidance office and cafeteria into one home. With design elements such as drop-down wood ceiling fins that stretch from the main area of the commons into the media center, and ample natural light exposed for both areas, students now have a greater amount of space to gather and collaborate. An addition to The Commons, the athletic spaces were renovated as well with the gym keeping the original glass block windows that allow for ample natural light to fill the space as well. New additions to the high school include a new science wing, band and choir facilities; and new offices for administrative personnel. On the exterior, the original front entrance was restored while the athletic entrance was renovated to become a hall of fame for the accolades of the sports and music programs alike.
